- ➤ Judge Emmit Tayloe said during a March 17 meeting that Lawton’s community sentencing program will close this summer due to low state funding—participants are nonviolent offenders who fall short of proper supervision needs. The program, which began in 2016, is expected to hold its final graduation in June. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ Lawton Youth Sports Trust Authority hired Standard Engineering and Field Services to evaluate the soil at the proposed indoor youth sports complex on a 40-acre tract near MacArthur High School. The contractor will study subgrade and foundation conditions—its contract was approved on March 13 and costs $33,654. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ The Oklahoma Water Resources Board approved a $39 million low‑interest loan that Lawton will use with about $14 million in grants to start repairs at Lakes Ellsworth, Lawtonka and the old Gondola Dam. Officials said repairs at Lake Ellsworth—which supplies 20% of the city’s water and is a high‑hazard dam—will cost nearly $47 million and take about two years to help protect more than 5,200 people downstream. - ➤ The Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a bill on Monday that bans anyone under 16 from using social media—social media companies must verify users’ ages or face a $2,500 fine for each violation. Representatives said that 16- and 17-year-olds can have accounts with parental consent—now the bill heads to the Senate. ABC 7
- ➤ The Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority released its Fiscal Year 2024 report showing that its three-year enforcement drive cut licenses for growers, dispensaries, and processors while reducing patient licenses; the agency is now building a robust patient services unit—completing new quality assurance lab protocols funded with a $4.9 million Legislature appropriation. It will focus on emerging science, patient outreach, and product safety to ensure operators prioritize public health. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ Councilman George Gill said Lawton’s traffic signals were outdated and long delays led frustrated drivers to run red lights because the systems are over 50 years old. He said the city may spend 80+90 million dollars on new equipment while police and council work to add street lights and create pork chop islands to improve traffic flow. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ Oklahoma lawmakers approved a bill on March 25 that will raise foster family payments by $5 a day—marking the first boost since 2018 after a local foster family could not accept extra siblings. The measure will ease financial challenges for caregivers and take effect soon. ABC 7

- ➤ Comanche County Memorial Hospital started a detox program a little over a year ago and has helped nearly 300 local residents with alcohol and drug withdrawal—Latricia Murphy said patients can be admitted any day for a three-day stay using IV support—while most insurance plans cover the treatment.
