COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Due to federal DOGE cuts canceling the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program, the Lawton Food Bank may see changes in its ability to feed local families—about one third of last year's food came through that program. Last year the food bank served 15,838 families with 1.37 million pounds of food—raising concerns that future meal supplies may be lower.  The Lawton Constitution
  • Fort Sill Indian School will host an alumni reunion on April 4-5 at its campus on Lawrie Tatum Road in Lawton—planned events include an opening ceremony, a sock hop, a BBQ dinner, and a Color Run that is free for kids 12 and under and costs $25 for others.  The Lawton Constitution

CRIME NEWS

  • Jeremiah Paul Jenkins, 39, was jailed on a $100,000 bond after gunshots wounded one man in Lawton—he faces felony charges of assault and battery with a deadly weapon and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.  The Lawton Constitution

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A tower for a tall water slide has been erected at Elmer Thomas Park—slide pieces now await installation as construction of the City of Lawton aquatic center continues and officials plan to open the new water complex by Fourth of July Weekend.  The Lawton Constitution
  • The Oklahoma House passed House Bill 2012 — written by Rep. Daniel Pae from Lawton — to keep harm-reduction programs like needle exchange and fast STI testing running until July 1st, 2027. These services were set to end in 2026.  The Lawton Constitution
  • Today the Oklahoma Senate passed Senate Bill 445—raising the age of consent from 16 to 18—and bill author Warren Hamilton said the measure will protect children and close legal loopholes as it now moves to the Oklahoma House for discussion.  ABC 7
  • City Council members approved a $4.35 million mill and overlay project to upgrade Southwest 38th Street between West Gore and West Lee boulevards and work will begin in mid-April. T&G Construction will start with the south half-mile section south of the railroad tracks — a project the city has planned for years.  The Lawton Constitution

HEALTH NEWS

  • Colorectal cancer is expected to cause over 50,000 deaths this year, and doctors at the Cancer Centers of SWOK urge people to begin screening at age 45 to catch the disease early—free fecal occult tests are available at four locations and results will be provided by phone. This message aims to help locals lower their risk by detecting colon cancer sooner.  ABC 7
