COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ 7News anchors Haley Wilson and Dave Hunter joined City of Lawton's Caitlin Gatlin and LPD Lieutenant Charles Whittington in a Community Conversations segment discussing an upcoming Sexual Assault Awareness event — set from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on April 3 at the Lawton City Hall banquet room — that will highlight LPD’s newly re-branded Special Victims Unit. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust awarded a record 42 Healthy Incentive Grants totaling $349,000 to schools across Oklahoma to support programs helping students eat better, move more, and live tobacco-free; five Lawton schools—Hugh Bish Elementary, Carriage Hills Elementary, Cleveland Elementary, Eisenhower Elementary, and Eisenhower High—are among those receiving funds. - ➤ Lawton Public Schools students in John Cullison’s Construction Trades classes at Life Ready Center built 20 soap box cars for Freedom Fest in June. The project began when Comanche Home Center asked Cullison to lead the build — the students spent days cutting, sanding and assembling the cars — which will be raced by participants. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Voting takes place today across Southwest Oklahoma as cities hold several local elections—Cache and Elgin choose mayoral candidates while Duncan votes for its Ward 3 council representative and voters in Grady County, Velma-Alma Public Schools, and Frederick decide on propositions. ABC 7
- ➤ At Fort Sill, more than 50 soldiers received the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge on March 31 for marksmanship, physical fitness and first aid + the honor recognized the longstanding military partnership between the US and Germany. ABC 7
- ➤ Three candidates are running for mayor in Elgin as one is the incumbent and two bring fresh ideas. Incumbent JJ Francais—who has served since 2021—says the city needs improved roads and water systems while Holly Martinez and Hannah Vaughn plan to boost community services. ABC 7
- ➤ The Senate approved Senate Bill 3—introduced by Sen. Grant Green, R-Wellston—that bans the use of sewage sludge and biosolid materials as fertilizer in Oklahoma and requires users to gradually cut back until a complete ban takes effect on July 1, 2027. The Lawton Constitution
- ➤ The Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce approved former President and CEO John Michael Montgomery's resignation (confirmed at a board meeting Monday afternoon). The Lawton Constitution

- ➤ The Lawton Country Club is hosting a lecture on colorectal cancer today. Dr. Andrew Stevens from Southwestern Medical Center will discuss early detections and screenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. ABC 7
