- ➤ Julie Marie Welch, who was 23, is remembered as one of the 168 victims of the Oklahoma City Bombing and worked as a Spanish interpreter for Social Security. She was born in Oklahoma City, learned many languages and planned to marry an Air Force lieutenant—her life is honored with the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. ABC 7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Five local schools have been awarded TSET Healthy Incentive Grants to support tobacco-free policies, nutrition and physical activity programs. Three elementary schools received $3,000 each, Eisenhower Elementary received $4,000 and Eisenhower High received $6,000—additional funds were given to a charter school in Comanche County and districts in Grady and Tillman counties. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lawton officials have not yet decided how to allocate the $742,497 Community Development Block Grant funds to groups that support homeless people. An April 1 meeting of the Homeless Action Committee—where service groups urged equal funding—ran long and deferred the decision to the City Council. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ Residents visiting the utility payment drive-through at City Hall should note that wait times may increase on Mondays, Fridays and near the first and last weeks of the month between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.—new card reader machines will be installed soon to streamline transactions. Southwest Ledger
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma will offer free head and neck cancer screenings in Lawton on Saturday, April 26 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. by appointment only and Dr. Leann Smith said early detection is key to successful treatment, urging residents to call 580-536-2121. ABC 7
- ➤ The Region 3 Regional Medical Response System’s Healthcare Coalition holds its yearly training today at McMahon Lecture Hall in Lawton—about 115 people have signed up—and will focus on pediatric care with speakers from both metro and rural areas. ABC 7

- ➤ Lawton residents can learn about local housing issues at the Lawton-Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce’s State of Housing Luncheon set for noon April 22 at the Lawton Country Club (4601 W. Gore Blvd).
