- ➤ A weekend book sale raised more than $11,000 for Lawton Public Library (bargain-priced books sold well) as community members supported the library. The Lawton Constitution
- ➤ Today, KSWO honored Clarence Eugene Wilson Sr. who served as chief legal counsel for HUD and as a councilman in Forest Park during the 168 Days of Remembrance for Oklahoma City Bombing victims. Born on Aug. 8, he became the first African American to earn a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from OU, and family say he was a caring person. ABC 7
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former Lawton City Councilman Jay Ron Burk faces a preliminary hearing on May 20 as he is charged with first-degree rape of an unconscious man and with distributing obscene material involving that individual—he is accused of assaulting the victim at his Lawton home after a night of heavy drinking. - ➤ Eisenhower High School students plan to host a BEAK Week fundraiser to support literacy programs at Lawton Public Library—organizers say funds will boost local reading initiatives. The Lawton Constitution
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lawton City Council has received feedback about long wait times at City Hall’s indoor service counters and the drive-through kiosk at 212 SW Ninth St—residents have also complained about the missing payment drop box. The Utility Services Department will consider restoring the drop box and exploring other options to improve service accessibility. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ The Comanche County Facilities Authority hired an auditor to check the detention center's compliance with the federal law that seeks to eliminate sexual abuse in correctional facilities. The County Commissioners approved the contract on March 31 and the $4,000 audit is scheduled for Oct. 8-10. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ Reconstruction of 38th Street has begun and a mill-and-overlay project is planned to repair the busy corridor using ad valorem tax receipts—traffic is being detoured on 38th Street between Gore and Lee boulevards. Traffic is also routed around two 92-year-old bridges on South 11th Street that are set for demolition and replacement, with bids due by May 1st and construction to start mid-May. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ City Council approved moving animal welfare operations from the old site on Sixth St. to a former fire station on Lee Blvd—GH2 Architects presented plans on April 8 to renovate the building from roughly 4,000 to 12,700 square feet at a cost of $5,068,234 with construction set to begin in August. Meanwhile, a lawsuit over a life insurance policy naming Lawton Animal Shelter as a beneficiary remains unsettled as parties prepare for a possible trial on May 13 if no settlement is reached.
