CRIME NEWS

  • Wayne Thompson—58—was granted parole by Gov. Stitt on April 21 after spending over 40 years in prison for murdering the man who hurt his sister; parole for violent crimes is rare and his release was long delayed due to the nature of his offense.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at five Lawton Public Schools will get more fresh air and sunshine next semester after the schools were awarded a total of $19,000 in TSET Healthy Incentive Grants — funds that support healthier school environments.  The Lawton Constitution
  • LPS students took part in the fourth annual Cardboard Cup Race in Lawton that featured cool sailing and wet learning activities + gave them a hands-on way to explore new skills.  The Lawton Constitution

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials in Lawton are preparing to set the admission fees for the first year of the new aquatics center at Elmer Thomas Park — they will soon select a contractor to manage its development.  The Lawton Constitution
  • More than 1,700 military family homes at Fort Sill will receive new HVAC systems over the next three years—boosting comfort for the families living there.  The Lawton Constitution
  • City Council members will consider proposals today to raise revenue for next year's budget (including a plan for a 12 percent fee increase) to help balance expenses.  The Lawton Constitution
  • Legislators in Oklahoma are considering a bill that will require doctors to register with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority and complete an education course before recommending medical marijuana to patients. The House Health and Human Services Oversight Committee approved the bill and it will face a full House vote — a move in line with rules in 11 states — according to Representative Carl Newton and cannabis activist Jed Green.  ABC 7

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Comanche County Health Department is hosting an Open House today from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Lawton to let community members meet the team and learn about immunizations, nutritional support and preventative care—attendees can also connect with community partners.  ABC 7
  • Local podiatrist Dr. Scott Kochenower of Comanche County Memorial Hospital advised residents to care for their feet and ankles as we head into spring and summer (he stressed that proper support can help avoid pain, especially for those with diabetes). He explained that treatments like bunion corrective surgery and ligament repair are available to help keep people moving.  ABC 7
