COMMUNITY NEWS

  • During a 5 p.m. airing of Community Conversations today, Dave Hunter and Haley Wilson interviewed members of Menes Shrine Temple #32 about their planned Walk to Cure Diabetes. The walk will be held at Elmer Thomas Park on Saturday, May 10, with registration starting at 7:30 a.m. and the walk beginning at 8:45 a.m.—shirts cost $20 and free diabetes tests will be offered.  ABC 7
  • Today, community anchors Haley Wilson and Dave Hunter and community engagement librarian Tanya Organ explained that the Lawton Library will host events — Roots and Branches lab, Shopping Smart, Community Baby Shower and Tiny Art Show.  ABC 7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce expects to begin interviews soon to hire a new president in the coming weeks.  The Lawton Constitution

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Oklahoma State Department of Education is offering free, practical training for school board members that is based on real world challenges. It has set the Annual Governance Conference for new board members on July 31 (and for all board members on August 1) at the University of Central Oklahoma Nigh Center.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fort Sill stands to benefit from the Army Transformation Initiative that cuts outdated systems and merges Army Futures Command with TRADOC—Major Visser said the base's training mission will remain unchanged today. Future decisions on equipment and modernization are pending as the initiative aims to streamline processes and improve operational capabilities.  ABC 7
  • The Lawton-Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce is hosting its State of the State Luncheon today at noon at the Lawton Country Club—Governor Kevin Stitt will speak as guests register early for limited seating.  ABC 7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today the Comanche County Health Department hosts its free Neuro Navigators Support Group at 9 to 10 a.m. at 1010 Southwest Sheridan Road — offering resources and support for parents of neurodiverse children with a virtual option available.  ABC 7
  • A chaplain from Comanche County Memorial Hospital said families can ease stress by discussing care wishes and filling out living wills before a loved one can no longer speak. He added that knowing a patient's wishes—such as whether to continue life support—can guide family decisions during tough times.  ABC 7
  • The Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma are offering free skin cancer screenings in Altus on May 10, in Lawton on May 17, and in Duncan on May 30. Dr. Gabriel Vidal said the events help residents learn to spot warning signs of sun damage—early detection may prevent serious illness.  ABC 7
