EDUCATION NEWS

  • Abbas Johari, a long-time professor in the Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Cameron University since 2011, has been named Distinguished Faculty.  The Lawton Constitution
  • Four Lawton Public Schools students will have two graduation ceremonies this month — they will graduate from Cameron University today and then attend a second ceremony later this month.  The Lawton Constitution
  • The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded about $180,000 to literacy programs in Oklahoma, including a $10,000 grant to Friends of the Lawton Public Library (part of a record setting one day donation of over $13.2 million).  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Gentner Drummond filed a complaint against CVS Pharmacy for allegedly overcharging Medicaid by charging higher prices than those given to other customers (the claim covers fraud from 2016 until at least 2022) and joined by Indiana, Connecticut, and Massachusetts after the filing on April 14.  ABC 7
  • Senator Warren Hamilton secured unanimous Senate approval for House Bill 1003 (which raises the age of consent from 16 to 18 to fight child sex trafficking) and the bill will take effect immediately after it is signed.  ABC 7
  • VA Secretary Doug Collins testified before Congress this week and said a 15% workforce reduction with new technology will make veteran care more efficient—veterans in the Texoma area may see improvements. He urged veterans to use their benefits and hold the department accountable as it works to standardize services across hospitals.  ABC 7
  • Lawmakers passed two bills to change Oklahoma’s unemployment tax system—one bill lowers the top tax rate from 9.2 percent to 6.5 percent and the other requires in-person interviews to check fraud. Both bills now head to the governor’s desk for final approval.  ABC 7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Comanche County Memorial Hospital recently held a stroke screening to help people learn their risks—by checking blood pressure, a heart monitor for atrial fibrillation and labs for diabetes, high cholesterol and other factors. The event stressed that anyone with stroke symptoms like balance problems, droopy face, weak arm and slurred speech should go to an emergency room immediately.  ABC 7
