COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Comanche County Health Department hosted a community baby shower today at Central Plaza in Lawton to offer baby supplies and parenting resources to new and expecting parents. About 25 groups + vendors provided games, raffles + refreshments to support families in the area.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Wednesday morning, crews began work to restore a 32 foot long native stone arch weighing 16,000 lb at Fort Sill Indian School in Lawton—aiming to return it to its original state.  The Lawton Constitution
  • The Lawton Heritage Association will host Frank Rush III at the Historic Mattie Beal Home today as he shares details from his book Wichita Mountain Fun and his family history in the Wichitas. Members can purchase a signed copy for $25 and enjoy hors d’oeuvres, so they should act fast because seating is limited.  ABC 7
  • Azul Studios, a new art gallery dedicated to foster youth, held its grand opening on Friday after a ribbon-cutting by the Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce Redcoats, and owner Rachel Elizalde (owner and artist) said the gallery will offer art classes and a venue for local artists. The studio will host a Follow Your Dreams event today from (noon to 7 p.m.) with live music, art vendors, and food.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fort Sill’s Joint Counter Small UAS University is growing its training program to help the Army fight enemy drones as part of its transformation plan. The school will be fully ready on June 1 and will soon train up to 5,000 students each year, up from about 1,000 now.  ABC 7
  • The City of Lawton merged its Parks and Recreation and Community Services Departments on Friday to form the new Community Enrichment Department that aims to boost life quality for all residents. The city will celebrate the merger on June 12 in the Banquet Room at City Hall — the event will preview the Lawton Aquatics Center and offer a drawing for season passes for a family of four.  ABC 7
  • A bill to eliminate a six percent markup on consumer goods passed the Senate with strong support and now heads to the Governor's desk. If signed, it will repeal the 76-year-old Price Control Act—imposing a minimum markup on necessary goods—and take effect on Nov. 1.  ABC 7
