- ➤ Lawton residents honored Lt. Col. Meech Tahsequah at the American Legion Post now named after him, marking the service of the Comanche veteran who was lost in a 1950 plane crash near Tsushima Island. Family members and Comanche Nation leaders met at the Meech Tahsequah Memorial Garden and named May 21 as Meech Tahsequah Day — a lasting tribute to his sacrifice. Southwest Ledger

- ➤ Lawton firefighters extinguished a fire in a vacant home Tuesday night a little before 10:00 p.m. near southwest 13th and Bishop Road—fire marshals are investigating the cause. ABC 7

- ➤ Spencer’s will open its first-ever standalone store at Lawton Marketplace on 82nd Street on June 7 with treats, giveaways, games — and a $10 gift card for the first 100 customers. The event will run from 1 to 5 p.m. at 2136 NW 82nd Street, Space #25. ABC 7
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Lawton couple pleaded guilty to charges for sex trafficking minors—Nia Hall, known as Karmella, pleaded May 19 to conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and Jackie Antonio Duncan pleaded guilty April 30 to recruiting underage girls for prostitution—and they face up to life in prison and fines of up to $250,000. - ➤ Elizabeth Willodson from Lawton graduated from the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics on Saturday. She will attend Yale as she joins one of the state’s most competitive academic programs. The Lawton Constitution
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City officials renewed the permit for repairs at Lake Ellsworth and awarded a $46.4 million contract to McMillen Inc. to fix its spillway that was damaged in heavy rains in 2015. Work will begin in early June and take about two and a half years while repairs to the Lawtonka and Gondola Lake dams will be funded with a $39 million low-interest loan and state and federal grants. - ➤ The state approved bills today to buy the 2600-bed Lawton Correctional Facility for 312 million dollars amid rising violence and multiple homicides since early 2024. Officials said they will offer current staff state employment and review inmate programs before the facility becomes state-run on Sept. 1. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ Medicine Park Board of Trustees created a tourism advisory committee on May 22 — five members appointed by Mayor John Branch will help promote tourism in town. The committee will meet at least four times a year — it must hold four meetings or have three members by July 1 or it will be disbanded. Southwest Ledger

- ➤ The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Central/Western Oklahoma chapter will host its Great Strides Walk to Cure Cystic Fibrosis event in Lawton on June 5th—Texoma families will join the walk to support cystic fibrosis research. ABC 7
