- ➤ Paradise Valley Volunteer Fire Department will host its annual fish fry fundraiser near Lake Lawtonka on Saturday, June 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.—all proceeds benefit the department. ABC 7
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ New Jerusalem Baptist Church is hosting a citywide Juneteenth celebration on Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. — the event's theme is 'Back to the Beginning.' The Lawton Constitution
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Lawton Public Library held its first summer Story Time in the Park Tuesday to give local children a fun and educational morning start (the event took place in the library park). The series will continue through the summer with more events planned (updates on future dates will be shared soon). The Lawton Constitution
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fort Sill officials have shared plans to celebrate the Army’s 250th Birthday with a live fire demonstration the public can join + a weapons display that will honor the nation’s values using the theme This We’ll Defend. ABC 7
- ➤ A legislative bill giving firefighters a tax credit for unreimbursed cancer screening costs became law last week without the governor’s signature after the measure reached his desk unacted. The Fighting Chance for Firefighters Act, championed by Rep. Daniel Pae of Lawton, will take effect Nov. 1+ the credit will start in tax year 2026 and carry forward for up to five years. - ➤ Lawton officials approved a water rate rise for industrial users when Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. agreed to raise its rate from $2.55 to $2.78 per 1,000 gallons on July 1 & as part of a five-year plan to have all users pay equal rates under federal rules. The plan will gradually increase rates to $3.50 and tie future adjustments to a price index starting April 1, with the change expected to bring about $95,000 in revenue in fiscal year 2025-26.
