EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cameron’s Social Sciences Department offers six degree plans including criminal justice—students learn about law enforcement roles, crime prevention, and the court system and can earn either an associate or bachelor’s degree with ride-along and internship opportunities. Professor Dr. Lance Janda said the program prepares students for many careers such as law enforcement, law school, and state work.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Legislators extended the State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering’s sunset date by one year to protect the licenses of more than 77,000 professionals—this law took effect immediately after a governor vetoed a longer extension.  ABC 7
  • The Oklahoma Department of Corrections agreed to buy Lawton Correctional Facility from The GEO Group and will assume control on July 25th. The state will review the purchase and offer current employees jobs pending background checks to ensure a smooth transition.  ABC 7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Comanche County Memorial Hospital is upgrading its medical record system from several separate channels to a single MEDITECH system that will let doctors see all patient records — a change that should improve care. Project manager Frieda O’Brien said the new system will go live in August — employees will get trained before the switch.  ABC 7
