- ➤ Fishy's Friends Rescue will open a branch for stray cats and kittens in Lawton — the new branch will care for feral animals and expand the rescue's services. The Lawton Constitution
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Cameron University President Shane Hunt, a first-generation college graduate, has announced a new scholarship for full-time freshmen and sophomores who are the first in their families to attend college—called the President Hunt First Generation Scholarship, which will help students complete a degree. - ➤ The Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce will host a State of Education Luncheon on August 5 at the Hilton Garden Inn from noon to 1 p.m., where guest speakers Kevin Hime (Superintendent at Lawton Public Schools) and Dr. Shane Hunt (newly hired Cameron University President) will share insights on education priorities. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Congressman Tom Cole and Senator James Lankford have sent a letter to Secretary of the Army asking him to remove the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum from the closure list—citing that closing it would hurt both Fort Sill and the local area. They hope the letter leads to a timely decision that will preserve the historic Artillery Half-Section and the base’s traditions. ABC 7
- ➤ The Lawton City Clerk’s Office is accepting applications from residents to fill the empty Ward 2 City Council seat—residents can apply to serve as the new representative. The process will soon determine who fills the vacancy. The Lawton Constitution
- ➤ The Comanche County Health Department announced that applications are now open for its 17-week ‘Getting Ahead’ financial program that helps people address economic instability — applications close July 30. ABC 7
- ➤ Airmen at Altus Air Force Base and the 97th Air Mobility Wing supported Operation Midnight Hammer last month by quickly refueling and airlifting long-range bombers to hit key Iranian nuclear sites—using KC-135, KC-46 and C-17 aircraft. ABC 7
