COMMUNITY NEWS

  • LETRA will stay open on weekends through September, offering putt-putt golf, boating, paintball, and archery while the beach and water slide close on September 1 — the center will operate from 11 AM to 7 PM on Saturdays and Sundays and will also open on September 1 for Labor Day.  ABC 7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • LAWTON — The Comanche County Industrial Development Authority is considering selling a 320-acre site north of the SW Rail Industrial Park to Firehawk Aerospace, which wants to build a rocket fuel manufacturing plant there. Firehawk plans to invest $22 million in equipment for a $23 million plant and the authority discussed this plan on Aug. 19 but has not taken action yet.  Southwest Ledger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawton voters can learn about candidates for City Council wards 3, 4 and 5 at a forum on Aug. 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. at VFW Post 5263—candidates will share their plans while voters also learn about two charter amendments before the Sept. 9 primary and a potential general election on Nov. 18.  Southwest Ledger
  • Governor Kevin Stitt signed five criminal justice reform bills at the Capitol on Tuesday. House Bill 1460 cuts court fees and drew praise from reform groups — House Bill 2364 helps inmates obtain a REAL ID license, and both will take effect on Nov. 1.  ABC 7
  • Candidates Kirby Brown, Paul Greene and Charlie Pulliam are running for Lawton’s Ward 3 council seat—each plans to address local issues including roads, absentee landlords and a detailed review of the city budget. Early voting is set for Sept. 4 and 5 while Election Day is on Sept. 9.  ABC 7
  • Taron Epps was sworn in as Ward 2 councilman today — he will work on local government issues with the city council.  The Lawton Constitution

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Comanche County Hospital Authority has received an $899,497.24 grant from the Oklahoma Opioid Abatement Board to expand its program for opioid-affected perinatal women and newborns—adding a dedicated Perinatal Case Manager and two doulas—to improve screening and treatment referrals.  Southwest Ledger
