COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lawton Police Department is preparing for its annual Cops and Kids Picnic in Lawton on Sept. 13 at Elmer Thomas Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free event will offer police car rides, live demonstrations — plus food and door prizes for families.  ABC 7

CRIME NEWS

  • Lawton officials set a $750,000 bond for a man — already wanted for violating the Mary Rippy Violent Crime Registration Act — who is in jail on other charges after he was accused of shooting another man over a woman.  The Lawton Constitution

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lawton’s Cameron University Department of Art, Music and Theatre Arts will host a chamber music concert at 7:30 p.m. on September 11 at the McCutcheon Recital—featuring guest artist Daniel McKelway.  The Lawton Constitution

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ike Elementary teacher Christina Leija—who was once bitten by a brown recluse—is using a spider infestation to lead a hands-on lesson on spiders, where students learn about their habits and safety. The class takes a close look at spider behavior in a real-life study.  The Lawton Constitution
  • Cameron University announced interim appointments in its Office of Academic Affairs for the 2025-26 academic year—following the resignation of Dr. Jennifer Dennis in Lawton. The new appointments will be effective soon to maintain academic oversight.  The Lawton Constitution

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The First 100 Yards event marks the start of Basic Combat Training for soldiers in the 434th Field Artillery Brigade in Lawton as it builds teamwork and confidence through controlled drills. Drill Sergeants guide trainees as they transition from civilian life to military service — an important step in forging their military careers.  ABC 7
  • The City of Lawton is getting an appraisal on 4 acres of land along Rogers Lane—this will let the tract be sold at auction.  The Lawton Constitution
  • City Council members amended the water codes to allow temporary water service—needed solely to test waterlines in structures.  The Lawton Constitution
