- ➤ Today the Lawton Public Library holds a genealogical research event for adults 18 and older from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at its main branch, where the Family and Local History Librarian helps guide participants in exploring genealogy resources (free event). ABC 7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Lawton Public Library is hosting the First LEGO League every Tuesday and Thursday until Nov. 25 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.—kids aged nine to 14 will build and program LEGO robots while learning about real-world issues. ABC 7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Comanche County Commissioners delayed a 23,920 dollars change order for demolishing the American National Bank and building a lighted parking lot near the Courthouse on Aug. 25—RCJ Construction may face a penalty as they preferred to rebid the items not in the original scope. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ Early voting opens Sept. 4 for Comanche County voters at the Election Board office — located at 315 SW Fifth St, Room 206 in Lawton. Voting will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 4 and 5 — any voters needing assistance should contact their precinct official. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ Lawton city officials remind residents to vote on proposed charter amendments that include adopting a True North Culture Statement and extending the probationary period for city workers, along with electing new council members for Wards 3, 4 and 5. Early voting will be held Sept. 4 and 5 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Comanche—and in-person voting will take place Sept. 11 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. ABC 7
- ➤ Two Oklahoma State House Representatives will join a meet and greet at the Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce on Thursday from 9 to 10 a.m.—attendees are encouraged to RSVP in advance. ABC 7
- ➤ Registered voters who become physically incapacitated after 5 p.m. Sept. 8 will be able to request an emergency ballot to vote in the Sept. 9 election under state law according to the Comanche County Election Board. Lawton voters in Wards 3, 4 and 5 will also elect their city council representatives and vote on two proposed charter changes on Sept. 9. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ The Comanche County Election Board reminded voters of election day laws for Sept. 9, stating that only voters and election officials will be allowed within 30 feet of ballot boxes and that electioneering and unapproved printed materials are banned within 300 feet. Officials also warned that posting images of marked ballots and bringing alcohol within a half mile of polling places will be illegal+ anyone who sees a violation should report it immediately. - ➤ Representative Gabe Woolley held an interim study last week on judicial reform proposals—focusing on House Bills 1100 and 1164—to improve accountability at the Department of Human Services and protect child custody safeguards. Attendees included former department workers, private investigators, affected families, attorneys, and lawmakers, and the proposals will be eligible for further review in the 2026 session. ABC 7
