COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Fort Sill will host its 47th Annual Retiree Appreciation Days this week. The event will begin on Thursday, Sept. 18th with an open house at the Rinehart Fitness Center from 8:30 a.m.—2:30 p.m. and continue on Friday, Sept. 19th with a luncheon at the Patriot Club at 11:30 a.m. followed by a retirement ceremony at the Rinehart Fitness Center at 2:00 p.m. ABC 7
- ➤ Lawton Public Library will host Save a Life Day on Sept. 25—an event that will support the community’s health, safety and well-being. The Lawton Constitution
- ➤ Fundraisers are underway to support the Thompson family after a fire destroyed their home Monday morning on Crater Creek Road. Cache High School has organized a donation drive and Cache Football Boosters will host an Indian Taco sale Saturday—10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—to raise funds for the family. ABC 7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, the Oklahoma Supreme Court issued a 5—2 decision to stay new social studies standards after 33 individuals filed a lawsuit in July, vacating its earlier order that rejected a stay. Schools must now use the 2019 standards until the case is resolved. ABC 7
- ➤ Lawton High School's renovation project is opening doors for students in the home improvements class. The work will also beautify and restore the school—improving the learning environment for all. The Lawton Constitution
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Kevin Stitt announced on Sept. 11 that he appointed three officials — Senior Advisor Dustin Hilliary, Chief Operating Officer David Ostrowe and Secretary of State Donelle Harder — after four appointees resigned in recent days. The governor said these appointments will strengthen leadership as state lawmakers prepare to return for the legislative session in February. Southwest Ledger
- ➤ Lawton has been awarded $5.125 million from the Environmental Protection Agency Federal Communities Grants to fund a new residuals dewatering process at its water plant—The funds will support construction of the upgrade and improve local water treatment. The Lawton Constitution
- ➤ District 1 Commissioner Ryan John said he is still considering options to offset the costs of housing Comanche County Detention Center prisoners in other counties — he is reviewing different funding approaches for the county jail. The Lawton Constitution
- ➤ State Treasurer Todd Russ will deliver the keynote speech at the Lawton—Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce State of Finance Luncheon on Sept. 23 at the Lawton Country Club at 4601 W. Gore Blvd. Local business leaders will listen as he outlines Oklahoma's future fiscal priorities and economic outlook for the region. Southwest Ledger

- ➤ The Department of Veterans Affairs & Lawton Indian Health Services will host a presumptive conditions event at Lawton Farmers Market on Sept 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help veterans & widows file disability claims under the PACT Act by offering enrollment assistance & health screenings. ABC 7
- ➤ Medicare Advantage is praised by Oklahoma seniors for offering integrated care, prescription coverage, and predictable costs—keeping them from having to choose between essentials. Lawmakers are urged to safeguard the program to protect seniors' freedom and health security. Southwest Ledger

- ➤ The Lawton Youth Sports Trust Authority voted 5—0 on Sept. 11 to choose The Boldt Company as construction manager at risk for a new youth sports complex, and Chairman Brian Henry will negotiate contract terms. The complex will be built on a 120-acre site off East Gore Boulevard near MacArthur High School, and ADG Blatt is designing the outdoor baseball fields and indoor facility. Southwest Ledger
