EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cameron University senior biology student Solomon Meraz earned top honors during his participation in the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in Cancer — a nationally recognized program. His award highlights his outstanding work in cancer research and reflects the strong academic spirit in Lawton.  The Lawton Constitution

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oklahoma lawmakers released the first part of a two-part study on rising homeowner insurance rates for public review. The bipartisan study—launched on Oct. 2—will have its second part released on Oct. 7.  ABC 7
  • The government shutdown continues and military service members face changes as assistance programs offer zero-interest loans, food support, and unemployment options for furloughed workers while some services are suspended at local bases. Changes include limited operations at Altus Air Force Base and furloughed civilian workers at Fort Sill—with affected projects and extracurricular activities set to resume only after funding is restored.  ABC 7
  • The Lawton Police Department will host Coffee with a Cop—an event for community dialogue—on Oct. 16 at the Lawton Chick-fil-A on Northwest Cache Road from 9 to 10 a.m.  ABC 7
  • Senator Nikki Nice recommended modernizing the Child Tax Credit after an interim study showed the credit had not been updated since 2007. She proposed making the credit refundable—this change aims to help families better afford basic necessities.  ABC 7

SPORTS NEWS

  • The MacArthur Highlanders are hosting their first home football game at MacArthur Field today and fans can park in the high school's west lot or the middle school lot. The school district upgraded the fields with turf, a press box, lights and scoreboards — adding new facilities for this season's home games.  ABC 7
