CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Lucille Mulhall, known as America’s first cowgirl, was born on her family ranch in Mulhall in 1885—she learned riding, roping, and cattle herding and later competed against men, impressing Theodore Roosevelt; she died in 1940 and was honored with inductions into the Rodeo Hall of Fame and the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A Lawton review committee has begun work on a proposal to restart the Tax Increment Financing District process—aiming to boost economic development in downtown Lawton. The process will also allow nearby entities to benefit as new economic development areas are created. The Lawton Constitution
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Elgin Alumni Association will host an All-Class Reunion on Saturday to welcome graduates back to town and celebrate shared school history—an event held every three years to reconnect former students. Attendees can look forward to networking and revisiting cherished memories. The Lawton Constitution
- ➤ The Lawton Public Library is partnering with Engage Learning and FISTA Innovation Park to host STEAM For All Family Night on Oct. 29 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The event will feature hands-on activities—robotics, hydraulics, 3D printing, and creative challenges—and STEM-related giveaways with a Halloween twist. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lawton’s aquatic center generated more than $50,000 in its first 33 days as department heads highlighted its success at a city meeting. Kelvin Ingram said thousands of visitors helped the center and the funds will aid more parks projects + support further city improvements. ABC 7
- ➤ Officials with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services said federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will be suspended starting November 1. The Lawton Constitution
