COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lawton Family YMCA is hosting its Healthy Kids Day Fall Fest at Shepler Park on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon to help kids get active. Kids can play pickleball, shoot free throws, join a Zumba party, and enjoy free health checks, snacks, haircuts, and a Color Dash at 10 a.m.—schools and teachers may earn donations and prizes.  ABC 7
  • House of Bread Ministry is accepting food donations for its food pantry in Lawton.  The Lawton Constitution
  • The 32nd annual Moonlight Walk Against Drugs moves indoors to the Great Plains Annex Building on Sheridan Road because rain is expected tomorrow. The event will be held alongside the second annual Tradesman Chili Cook-off in the Prairie Building with trunk-or-treating starting at 7 p.m. and a costume contest at 8 p.m.  ABC 7
  • Marie Detty New Directions Domestic Violence Shelter will host a Glow Walk for Domestic Violence Awareness Month today at Elmer Thomas Park starting at the Patriot Pavilion at 6 p.m.—attendees must donate at least one hygiene product such as feminine items, lotion, toothpaste or hair care products.  ABC 7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Oklahoma drilling picked up last week as two new rigs raised the state total to 42 while crews in western Oklahoma targeted liquids-rich rock in Cana Woodford and Granite Wash formations. Nationally, Baker Hughes reported 548 active rigs and operators expect that if prices hold, a few more rigs will be added to boost local paychecks & benefit royalty owners.  Southwest Ledger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawton's Air Defense Artillery Association will hold the 3rd Annual C-UAS Forum at FISTA on Oct. 28-29 to discuss threats from small unmanned aerial systems and showcase new counter technology—over 40 vendors will display the latest products. A golf tournament will be held on Oct. 27 to raise funds for scholarships.  ABC 7
  • The U.S. Department of Energy finalized a $1.6 billion loan guarantee for American Electric Power Transmission to upgrade nearly 1,400 miles of power lines in Oklahoma, serving about 1.2 million customers including those in Lawton (this project is expected to create over 1,000 construction jobs). The upgrade aims to strengthen grid reliability and meet growing power needs driven by data centers and artificial intelligence.  Southwest Ledger
  • LAWTON – The FISTA Development Trust Authority got a $2.5 million state grant for projects at its Innovation Park at Central Plaza when its board voted on Oct. 7. FISTA President/CEO Dr. Krista Ratliff said the grant will pay for tenant spaces, technology and infrastructure to boost local economic growth.  Southwest Ledger
