COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Torch Technologies donated $10,000 each to MIGHT Community Development and Lawton Mobile Meals to support their community aid initiatives in Lawton, Oklahoma.  ABC 7
  • The City of Lawton plans a Veterans Day Ceremony on Nov. 11 to honor veterans, featuring speeches by community leaders and a complimentary breakfast at Hilton Garden Inn.  ABC 7
  • MIGHT Community Development and Resource Center is set to transform the former Roosevelt Elementary School into a facility that will provide housing and a day center for families facing homelessness, seeking to raise $2.5 million to complete the project.  Southwest Ledger

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Rush Fire in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge spans 12,488 acres, is 48% contained, and is being fought by 125 personnel with evacuations not currently mandated but residents are advised to stay alert.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawton's City Council passed an ordinance requiring a five business days' advance notice for residents and businesses near planned street closures or blocks, an increase from the current 24 hours.  Southwest Ledger
  • The Lawton City Council approved additional funding for the rehabilitation of Gondola Lake Dam and enhancements to the water SCADA system to improve city water operations.  Southwest Ledger
  • The Lawton City Council decided to bill property owners over $278,000 for the cost of demolishing their dilapidated buildings, including a large nursing home.  Southwest Ledger
  • Three candidates, including incumbent Tom Cole (R), Mary Brannon (D), and James Stacy (I), vie for Oklahoma's Fourth Congressional District seat, with interviews highlighting their campaigns ahead of the Nov. 5 election.  ABC 7
  • Lawton City Council passed an ordinance banning unauthorized camping in public spaces, amid concerns and criticisms regarding its impact on the homeless population.  Southwest Ledger
